SINGAPORE – Allegations that a People’s Action Party (PAP) volunteer made disparaging remarks about Singapore Democratic Party chief Chee Soon Juan are “fictitious”, said the PAP in a statement on Tuesday (May 3).
Saying that it had checked with their volunteers and confirmed that the incident did not take place, PAP Executive Director Alex Yam noted: “What is telling is that the (Facebook) post claimed that the volunteer had asked Mr Ridhuan Abdullah to attend the PAP rally to show support.”
He added: “There was no PAP rally that day, and neither had any upcoming rally been announced.”
A Facebook user going by the name of Ridhuan Abdullah had on Sunday claimed that a PAP volunteer had asked him to attend the PAP rally to support PAP by-election candidate Murali Pillai. Mr Ridhuan then claimed that the volunteer asked why he was supporting an “unemployed” man to be a Member of Parliament after Mr Ridhuan told him he would be supporting Dr Chee instead. He also wrote that the volunteer allegedly said Dr Chee is “worthless”.
When Mr Murali was asked about the incident during a media doorstop this morning, he said: “Well, you must check the source first. I don’t have the details, but if you are able to provide me the details I can have a look at it, and be able to comment.
“As far as I’m concerned, it’s something that I certainly don’t subscribe to. Let me make it clear, whatever I do I put the residents in the centre of what we do.”
