SINGAPORE — Two new candidates will join the People's Action Party team to contest in Jurong Group Representation Constituency (GRC) in the coming General Election. They are lawyer Rahayu Mahzam and oncologist Tan Wu Meng.

They will join Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Minister of State (National Development) Desmond Lee and backbencher Ang Wei Neng.

Mrs Rahayu Mahzam, 35, a former deputy registrar of the Syariah Court, will be taking over the Bukit Batok East ward from Mdm Halimah Yacob, who will be contesting in the newly created Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. A lawyer specializing in civil litigation and family law, Mrs Mahzam currently sits on the National Library Board, the Malay Language Council and the National Youth Fund Advisory Committee.

Dr Tan, 40 is a consultant and medical oncologist at Parkway Cancer Centre. He has been understudying West Coast GRC MP Arthur Fong for the last six months and will replace Mr Fong whose Clementi ward will come under Jurong GRC in the coming GE. Mr Fong will be stepping down.

Speaking at the introduction of the candidates at a press conference held at the PAP Clementi Branch, Mr Tharman said he welcomed the inclusion of Clementi, which he said shares the same community vibe as Jurong.

Because it will be a new ward joining the GRC, Mr Tharman said he will be personally spending time in Clementi, together with Dr Tan.

If they are re-elected, the town council will be renamed to Jurong-Clementi Town Council with a separate office in Clementi for the residents' convenience, he added.

Through MPS sessions, home visits, community initiatives and building a volunteer pool, Mr Tharman said he and his team have built a good track record in working with agencies to solve issues faced by residents and will continue being "on the ground all the time and to serve with our hearts."

Meanwhile, MP for Jurong GRC David Ong, who helms the Bukit Batok ward, will be contesting in the newly carved out Bukit Batok Single Member Constituency (SMC).LAURA PHILOMIN
