SINGAPORE — After months of planning, designs for the SG50 Baby Jubilee Gift were unveiled yesterday, and parents will be able to start registering for the gift from Jan 1, after their child is born.

Under the initiative led by the National Population and Talent Division (NPTD) as part of Singapore’s 50th birthday celebration, parents of Singaporean children born next year will receive the gift, which comprises a special medallion, multi-functional shawl, baby sling, a set of baby clothes, diaper bag, scrapbook, family photo frame and a set of baby books.

The items were selected after a month-long vote earlier this year that saw about 20,000 people vote on more than 6,500 suggestions. Save for the design of the medallion, designs of all the items were displayed yesterday at a gathering held for more than 200 Singaporean family partners and community partners for the SG50 Baby Jubilee Gift at Suntec City.

Parents can choose to register immediately after their child is born at birth registration counters in hospitals. To register, parents will be required to provide the birth certificate number of their child.

For those who wish to register at a later date, forms will be made available at the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) when parents register their child as a Singapore citizen. Alternatively, they can do so online at http://www.nptd.gov.sg/sg50baby.

The gifts can be collected within two weeks of registration. They can be delivered to parents’ homes for free or collected at hospitals or the ICA. An NPTD spokesperson said parents are strongly encouraged to register within the first two months of their child’s birth, before the baby outgrows items such as mittens and socks.

As for parents tempted to sell off these specially commissioned items, the spokesperson said the NPTD hopes parents will appreciate the gifts.

Unveiling the gift set, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Grace Fu said Singaporeans, young and old, had participated in creating this memento through suggestions and votes, making this truly a gift for Singaporeans by Singaporeans.

Community contributors such as local designer Wang Shijia — better known as the creator of the Ang Ku Kueh Girl — and LASALLE’s final-year Diploma in Design Communications students also played a role in the design process. “The SG50 Baby Jubilee Gift comes with all the best hopes from this generation of Singaporeans to the next,” said Ms Fu.

Expecting their first child in February, Mr Terence Tan, 35, and his wife Ms Lin Qi Hui, 31, who were at the event yesterday, said the gifts had turned out better than they expected and were “things we would actually buy”.

“When we were planning for a baby, we weren’t expecting anything from the Government and were not even aware it would coincide with Singapore’s 50th birthday. It’s a special year for the baby to be born in,” said Ms Lin.
