SINGAPORE — The parents of the Indonesian maid who allegedly murdered her employer, socialite Nancy Gan Wan Geok, will be coming here to help with investigations.

The court heard yesterday that the psychiatrist needs to interview the parents of 23-year-old Dewi Sukowati to complete the evaluation report.

Dewi, who has been remanded for psychiatric assessment, is accused of causing the death of 69-year-old Gan at her Victoria Park Road bungalow on the morning of March 19. Gan was found dead in her swimming pool, clad in her pyjamas with head injuries. Once married to former Hong Kong politician Hilton Cheong Leen, she was an accomplished pianist and a porcelain artist known for regularly donating her works to raise funds for charity.

Dewi’s lawyer Mohamed Muzammil told the court that her parents were to arrive in Singapore later this month. He also requested for Dewi’s age to be verified as she might be younger than stated. The domestic worker was reported to have come to Singapore to work recently from a village in Pati, Central Java.

Her case will be heard again on April 17. If convicted of murdering her employer, Dewi faces the death penalty.

Gan’s death was the second murder case involving a maid last month. On March 4, Than Than Win, a 24-year-old maid from Myanmar, was charged with the murder of an 85-year-old Singaporean woman at Springdale Condominium in Bukit Timah. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
