Parliament to formally recognise Schooling's Olympic victory: PM Lee

SINGAPORE - The Parliament will move a motion when it sits on Monday to congratulate and formally recognise swimmer Joseph Schooling's Olympic triumph, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said on Saturday (Aug 13).

Writing on Facebook, Mr Lee said he had called Schooling in Rio to congratulate him on the race, where he set a new Olympics record of 50.39s in the 100m butterfly event. The swimmer is due to be back in Singapore on Monday at about 5am to celebrate his victory with Singapore.

"I said Parliament happens to be meeting on Monday, and we plan to move a motion to congratulate him on his gold, and to express support for Team Singapore in ‪#‎Rio2016‬," Mr Lee wrote. "The motion will be a formal recognition of his achievements by Parliament."

Schooling told Mr Lee that he would be at the Parliament on Monday with his family.

"Look forward to seeing Joseph on Monday and personally congratulating him!" Mr Lee signed off on his Facebook post.
