SINGAPORE — Singapore Airlines (SIA) customers will soon be able to purchase their flights using PayNow, as DBS Bank and SIA have teamed up to enhance their digital capabilities.

A digital platform for travel purchases and an enhanced rewards programme are also in the works after both companies inked a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday (March 26).

DBS Singapore country manager Shee Tse Koon said that the partnership was significant as “Singaporeans are among the most well-travelled in the world with over 10.3 million overseas trips made in 2018 alone”.

“We would be able to elevate the consumer travel experience by offering extensive travel and retail options for travellers to choose from and customise their journeys right at the start,” he added.

PAYNOW FOR FLIGHTS

The new PayNow option will allow passengers more flexibility and convenience to pay for SIA flights from their bank accounts and tickets can be issued instantly once payment is completed.

PayNow is an interbank funds transfer service which allows users to send and receive payments between participating banks by using the recipient’s mobile phone number, NRIC or FIN (foreign identification number), or a company’s unique entity number. There is no limit for the transaction amount.

DBS said that the expanded payment mode for SIA flights was made possible by enhanced solutioning, which also offered instant credit confirmation and consolidated daily credit reporting. There are also other value-added options such as automated refunds.

“For instance, in the event that the trip is amended or cancelled, SIA can refund the outstanding amount back to the passenger’s bank account,” said the bank.

NEW PLATFORM, MORE REWARDS

The collaboration is facilitated by the companies’ API technology, and DBS is the first bank partner that SIA is connecting with via API for flight ticket sales and its retail store KrisShop.

An API, or application programming interface, is a set of requirements, routines and protocols issued by a business or institution that determine how one application communicates with another.

In line with this, DBS is set to launch a travel marketplace where customers can purchase flights, book hotels and buy travel insurance on an integrated digital platform.

A new DBS-SIA Rewards programme will also allow members of KrisFlyer, SIA’s frequent flyer programme, to instantly convert DBS points into KrisPay miles via the KrisPay application.

KrisPay miles can be used for retail purchases with its partners, such as Gong Cha bubble tea shops, TWG tea salons and Esso petrol stations.

Alternatively, KrisPay miles can be converted into KrisFlyer miles instantly within seven days of accrual. DBS is SIA’s first conversion partner on KrisPay.

These initiatives will be gradually rolled out this year, beginning with the DBS Travel Marketplace. The full suite of updates will be made available by the end of 2019.
