SINGAPORE — Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, former Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, and Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will be among the speakers at the inaugural Singapore Forum that starts tomorrow (April 10).

The theme for the first forum is “Asia and the World — New Growth, New Strategies”.

Former Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng said today that the forum will focus primarily on the challenges facing Asia, a region that is the “largest in terms of economy”.

“Leveraging on the neutral platform that Singapore offers, the forum will faciliate a frank and open exchange of views among participants. The discussions will be forward-looking and practical in its focus on the approaches, policies and strategies needed to deepen regional cooperation.” added Mr Wong.

The Singapore Forum will concentrate on issues involving technology, economics, and politics, among others. The other forums, such as the Shangri-La Dialogue and the ASEAN Regional Forum, usually concentrate on individual issues.

The by-invitation only event will be launched by the S Rajaratnam Endowment, a non-profit philanthropic organisation set up to honour Singapore’s first Foreign Minister. In conjunction with Singapore’s 50th Anniversary, the forum will be attended by 250 chairmen, Chief Executive Officers, senior executives, current and former political leaders and policymakers from the region.

A welcome dinner will be organised tomorrow evening, where PM Lee will participate in a dialogue session with the guests. The following day will see Dr Yudhoyono delivering the keynote address and Mr Shanmugaratnam speaking and answering questions.

Other speakers who will be speaking on Saturday include Thailands’ Minister for Energy Narongchai Akrasanee, US security company FireEye founder Ashar Aziz, Chairman of China Merchants Bank Ma Weihua and many others.
