PMD rider arrested after collision at Bedok North leaves 65-year-old woman in coma

SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old personal mobility device (PMD) rider has been arrested for “causing grievous hurt” after a collision at Bedok North on Saturday night (Sept 21), which left a 65-year old cyclist in a coma.

The 20-year-old PMD rider was also taken to CGH and was “subsequently arrested for causing grievous hurt by rash act”, Police said.

SINGAPORE — A 20-year-old personal mobility device (PMD) rider has been arrested for “causing grievous hurt” after a collision at Bedok North on Saturday night (Sept 21), which left a 65-year old cyclist in a coma. 

Police said they were alerted to an accident involving a PMD rider and a cyclist along Blk 539 Bedok North Street 3 at 10.57pm on Saturday.

“The cyclist, a 65-year-old woman, was unconscious when conveyed to Changi General Hospital (CGH),” the Police added.

According to The Straits Times, the cyclist, Mdm Ong Bee Eng, had been on her way home after attending a wake when the accident happened, causing her to suffer serious brain injury as well as fractures in her ribs and collar bone. 

Mdm Ong’s son told The Straits Times that she was in critical condition. 

The 20-year-old PMD rider was also taken to CGH and was “subsequently arrested for causing grievous hurt by rash act”, the Police said.

A photo by Shin Min Daily News shows a pool of blood on the pavement next to the cycling path. 

The Chinese language daily also reported that the e-scooter is suspected to have exceeded the weight limit and had been heavily modified.

Police investigations are ongoing.
