SINGAPORE — Internal action will be taken against a police officer who posed for onlookers while showing the victory hand sign and standing next to a blue tent erected at the scene of an unnatural death, the police said on Wednesday (June 29).

In a statement on Facebook, the police added that they had contacted the next-of-kin of the deceased and apologised for the officer’s actions.

"While the officer was not taking a photo of himself at the scene, he had responded inappropriately to the presence of onlookers in the vicinity," the police said.

A Facebook post circulating online on Wednesday shows a police officer making "V" signs with his hands while he was standing next to a blue tent that is typically used to cover a body. The location was not disclosed.

The post was written by Ms Tracy Lim, who said that she was a relative of the deceased and called the actions of the officer "utterly unacceptable and disrespectful".

“I do not wish this upon anyone, to have a uniformed officer treating their deceased family member like a joke, for his entertainment,” she wrote.

In their statement on Wednesday, the police said that the post pertained to a case of unnatural death attended by the police on Tuesday, where the deceased was found lying motionless at the foot of a block.

The police declined to give more information when asked about what internal action the officer would face. The name of the officer was not disclosed.

The Facebook post by Ms Lim was taken down as of 3pm on Wednesday, with her saying in a follow-up post that she has accepted the apology from the police and appreciates the swift action taken by the authorities.

“We wish to rest the matter and let our family have privacy as we prepare for the final arrangement for our aunt,” Ms Lim said.
