SINGAPORE — Hours after POSB bank announced its new “Fare Free Friday” initiative, EZ-Link’s website crashed due to overwhelming response from the public.

The initiative was launched yesterday (July 28) to give up to 100,000 holders of certain POSB cards unlimited free public transport rides on Fridays until the end of the year. The cards — POSB Everyday Credit Card or the PAssion POSB Debit Card — must be linked to EZ-Link’s automatic top-up service, EZ-Reload.

However, hours after POSB’s announcement, customers posted on EZ-Link and POSB’s Facebook pages complaining that they were unable to access the EZ-Link website to activate the EZ-Reload service to qualify for Fare Free Friday.

EZ-Link acknowledged the problem and said it was likely due to increased traffic resulting from POSB’s new initiative.

It said: “Our team has been giving their full attention to resolve the problem so that interested consumers can apply for EZ-Reload as soon as possible. We would like to thank everyone for their support and apologise for any inconvenience caused. For further updates, consumers can check out our Facebook page.”
