Primary One registration exercise to begin June 30

SINGAPORE — The registration of children for admission to Primary One (P1) classes in 2017 will begin in two weeks, the Ministry of Education announced on Thursday (June 30)

SINGAPORE — The registration of children for admission to Primary One (P1) classes in 2017 will begin in two weeks, the Ministry of Education (MOE) announced on Thursday (June 30).

The registration period is from June 30 to Aug 26. All primary schools will open for registration from 8am to 11am and from 2.30pm to 4.30pm from Mondays to Fridays during the registration period.

Parents must bring along the following documents at the time of registration:

Singapore citizens:

  • The child’s birth certificate
  • The child’s Singapore Citizenship Certificate for those who are not Singapore Citizens at the time of birth
  • Singapore NRIC of both parents or Entry / Re-entry Permits of parents if they do not possess Singapore NRIC
  • The child’s immunisation records

Singapore Permanent Residents:

  • The child’s birth certificate
  • The child’s Entry/Re-entry Permit
  • Singapore NRIC of both parents or Entry / Re-entry Permits of parents if they do not possess Singapore NRIC
  • The child’s immunisation records

Non-citizens or PRs:

  • The child’s birth certificate
  • The child’s passport
  • The child’s Immigration Exemption Order / Dependant’s Pass / Student Pass / Long-Term Visit Pass (if any)
  • Both parents' Passport / Singapore NRIC / Entry or Re-entry Permit
  • Both parents' Employment Pass / Work Permit / Long-Term Visit Pass (if any)
  • The child’s immunisation records
  • Any other documents as required by the school to support the registration

The first phase of the P1 registration exercise is only for Singapore citizens and PRs whose child has a sibling studying in the primary school of choice. This phase begins on June 30.

The next phase, Phase 2A(1), which begins on July 5, are for children who has at least one parent who is a former student of the primary school of choice and who has joined the alumni association as a member no later than June 30, 2015. Children who has a parent that is a member of the school's advisory or management committee can also register during this phase.

Phase 2A(2), which begins on July 12, is for children who has a parent or sibling who has studied in the primary school of choice and children whose parent is a staff member.

On July 18, Phase 2B opens for a child whose parent has joined the primary school as a parent volunteer no later than July 1, 2015 and has given at least 40 hours of voluntary service to the school by June 30. Children whose parents are a member of a church or clan connected with the primary school can also apply from this date as well as children whose parent is endorsed as an active community leader.

For all other children who are eligible for Primary One in the following year and are not yet registered in a primary school, Phase 2C will begin on July 27. During this phase, parents can also register their child online at the MOE's website.

Registration for children who are neither citizens nor PRs will only begin in Phase 3 on Aug 26.

Under the Compulsory Education Act, Singapore citizens born after Jan 1, 1996 and residing in Singapore are required to attend national primary schools. If a child is assessed as being not ready or suitable for P1 on medical grounds, a parent may seek approval from the Compulsory Education Unit for deferment of registration.
