SINGAPORE — Shoppers and diners at Raffles City Shopping Centre spent the evening in darkness after a power blackout at the mall on Monday (Jan 13).

Taking to social media, members of the public shared their account of what had happened, with many posting photos and videos of the mall in darkness.

Twitter users said that the whole mall, which is linked to City Hall MRT Station, was affected by the blackout, with videos showing people streaming out of the premises.

Some users also mentioned that electronic payments were affected by the power failure.

One Twitter user, who goes by the handle @alexischeong, said that the ATM machines and escalators were out of order as well. She added that despite all of this, Chinese New Year music can still be heard throughout the mall.

Other Twitter users shared photos of themselves having meals in the dark.

Writing on its Facebook page at 8.14pm, the mall’s management said that it was alerted to the partial power outage at about 8pm.

“We are working to resume the affected power supply soonest possible. We will continue to post updates here and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” it said in the post.

Raffles City Shopping Centre is managed by CapitaLand Malls.

In reply to TODAY’s queries, utility provider SP Group said it understands that there was an electricity supply interruption at parts of Raffles City.

“Our network is in order. We have reached out to Raffles City to offer assistance,” SP Group said.
