Resident proposes using town council’s billboard in Aljunied
SINGAPORE — An ‘unusual’ request in Aljunied GRC has generated a big reaction on social media.
SINGAPORE — An ‘unusual’ request in Aljunied GRC has generated a big reaction on social media.
A young man proposed to his girlfriend using the public billboard near Blk 117 Bedok Reservoir Road.
Posting on his Facebook page, MP for Aljunied GRC Pitram Singh shared a photo of a resident who made a request to propose to his girlfriend using the billboard.
The man, whom Mr Singh had identified as Jun Jie, printed a banner that read “Want to spend the rest of my life with you, will you marry me?”
Mr Singh said that the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council would “facilitate as many of such initiatives as it can” if the proposals did not “involve unsupervised rappelling down HDB blocks or the like”.
The post garnered over 1,700 ‘likes’ as of this evening (Dec 21).
Comments were overwhelmingly positive, with many congratulating the young couple. One Facebook user Edwina Teo said this was a demonstration of the “gotong royong” spirit.
There were some who voiced concern, perhaps tongue-in-cheek, about whether permits were needed and if this was ‘lawful’.
When asked by TODAY, Aljunied GRC resident Patrica Wong, 65, said she thought this was fine so long as it was not breaking the law.
“My colleagues all agreed that it is acceptable,” she said.
Another Aljunied resident, James Porter Edward, 23, probably summed up what most people thought. His reaction? “Pretty sweet!”
Jun Jie’s girlfriend likely agreed, as according to Mr Singh, she said yes.
