SINGAPORE — Police are investigating an alleged altercation between three safe distancing ambassadors and a couple in Woodlands earlier this month.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday (March 16) evening, a user who goes by the name Mai Surah claimed that the hostile encounter happened after her husband confronted the trio who were supposedly taking photos of their children at a playground on March 8.

Ms Mai Surah, who wrote that she was nine months' pregnant, also alleged that she was “pushed… down onto the road” and kicked during the clash.

The police said in response to TODAY’s queries on Thursday: “(We) confirm that a report was lodged and investigations are ongoing.”

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) wrote on Facebook on Thursday afternoon that it is aware of a social media post “describing an incident involving our safe distancing ambassadors who were carrying out their duties in Woodlands”.

“On March 8, 2022, three of our safe distancing ambassadors were on patrol and taking some pictures for routine reporting purposes, when they encountered two members of the public. An altercation arose, and our safe distancing ambassadors have since made police reports.

“Our safe distancing ambassadors wear their passes so that they can identify themselves as safe distancing ambassadors, in the course of their duty,” HDB said.

It added that it is unable to comment further on the issue and would “urge the public to refrain from speculating on the incident pending these (police) investigations”.

TODAY understands that Ms Mai Surah also filed a police report.

In the post on her Facebook account, she claimed that the three safe distancing ambassadors “began running away” after they were confronted by her husband.

“My husband then took his bicycle to chase after them while I (tried) to keep up,” she wrote.

She later caught up with the group at a traffic light and began taking photos of them.

Ms Mai Surah then claimed that one of the safe distancing ambassadors pushed her down and she also alleged that she was kicked while she was on the ground.

“My husband stopped the man who kicked me and managed to hold him down while waiting for the police,” she wrote.

“My baby is thankfully all right although my face was swollen and sustained bruises.”
