Schooling retires: A look back at the career highs and lows of Singapore's sole Olympic champion

SINGAPORE — Singapore's only Olympic gold medallist Joseph Schooling on Monday (April 2) announced that he has retired from competitive swimming.

TODAY takes a look at some of highs and lows that the 28-year-old has gone through in his career.

2009 - 2014: Schooling's parents, Colin and May Schooling, sent their 13-year-old child to study at The Bells School in Florida, United States. There, Schooling trained under coach Sergio Lopez, who later became Singapore's national swimming coach in 2015.

July 30, 2012: Schooling made his Olympic Games debut in 2012 in London, finishing 26th in the 200m butterfly heats and 35th in the 100m heats.

2012: Schooling is named Sportsman of the Year for the first time in 2012 by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC).

2014 - 2017: After completing high school, Schooling enrolled at the University of Texas in Austin, United States. He was then named Newcomer of the Year in his college's Big 12 Conference, whose previous winners include Olympic medallist Aaron Peirsol. He also clinched several individual titles including during the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) Division 1 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.

July 29, 2014: Schooling became the first Singaporean to win a swimming medal at the Commonwealth Games, clinching silver in the 100m butterfly.

Sept 24, 2014: Schooling won Singapore's first gold at the Asian Games in over two decades, winning the men's 100m butterfly event in Incheon with an Asian Games record time of 51.76s. He also took bronze and silver in the 200m butterfly and 50m butterfly respectively.

June 2015: Schooling broke more records at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore, where he won gold in all nine events that he took part in. Schooling also smashed Singapore's national record in the 50m freestyle, which was set by swimmer Ang Peng Siong in 1982.

Aug 2015: Schooling clinched Singapore's first medal at the Fina World Aquatics Championships, breaking several national records and the Asian record for the 100m butterfly event.

Aug 13, 2016: At the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Schooling beat his American role model Michael Phelps in the 100m butterfly and clinched Singapore's first ever gold medal. He also set a new Olympic record with a time of 50.39s, which beat Phelps' record 50.58s at the 2008 Olympics. Thousands in Singapore lined the streets to cheer the Olympic champion as he went on a three-stop victory parade across Singapore.

July 30, 2017: Schooling finished third at the 100m butterfly event at the Fina World Championships in Budapest, Hungary.

August 2017: At the 29th SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur, Schooling bagged six gold medals, including in the 50m and 100m butterfly events.

2018: Schooling turned professional; he was named a Hugo Boss ambassador and he signed a three-year partnership with DBS Bank. He also launched his swim school, Swim Schooling. After graduating from university, Schooling moved back to Singapore to train with the Singapore Swimming Association.

Aug 2018: Schooling bagged two gold medals in the 50m and 100m butterfly events, the latter with an Asian Games record, at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia. He also clinched two bronze medals in two relay team events.

May 14, 2019: Schooling was named by SNOC as Sportsman of the Year for the sixth time, the first athlete in Singapore to win the accolade more than five times.

July 2019: At the Fina World Championships in South Korea, Schooling failed to qualify for the semi-finals in the 50m and 100m butterfly events.

December 2019: Schooling won four gold and two silver medals at the SEA Games in the Philippines.

July 29, 2021: Schooling failed to qualify for the semi-finals at the Tokyo Olympics after he placed 44th in his 100m butterfly heat.

Jan 3, 2022: Schooling enlisted for full-time National Service after being granted a long-term deferment in 2014.

May 18, 2022: After clinching two golds and a bronze medal at the 2022 SEA Games in Hanoi, Schooling told reporters that expectations put on athletes serving NS should be managed.

Aug 30, 2022: Schooling confessed to consuming cannabis overseas while on a short-term disruption from NS to train and participate in the SEA Games. The Ministry of Defence later announced Schooling will no longer be eligible for leave or disruption to train or compete while serving.

March 1, 2023: Schooling pulled out of the 2023 SEA Games, saying that he was not performing at the level he expected himself to be.

April 2, 2024: Schooling announced his retirement from competitive swimming, citing plans to focus on growing his swim school.
