SINGAPORE — The Prosecution this afternoon (May 29) called on Chief District Judge Tan Siong Thye to impose an imprisonment sentence of at least 12 weeks on former law professor Tey Tsun Hang, who Judge Tan found guilty yesterday on all six charges of corruption in the sex-for-grades trial.
In his submissions, Deputy Public Prosecutor Andre Jumabhoy said “no iota of remorse is forthcoming of the accused”. The DPP called on Judge Tan to impose a jail term that should go beyond “the clanging of the prison gates”.
“He (Tey) needs an opportunity to reflect and to come to terms that he has committed serious offences,” Mr Jumabhoy said.
He added that Tey had shown a “systematic abuse of (his) position” and that his “conduct only got worse with time”.
“This accused did not only display that he was prepared to lie, he has proven to lie repeatedly.”
Tey had also sought in court “to disrupt proceedings by feigning illnesses”, the DPP added.
Judge Tan adjourned sentencing to next Mon, June 3, saying he needs "to go through both submissions (by the Prosecution and Tey's laywer Peter Low) very thoroughly."
Speaking to reporters later, Tey said he was "mentally prepared" for sentencing and that he had prepared "papers for appeal" against his conviction, which he will be filing once Judge Tan has delivered his sentence.
