According to Singapore’s “Year on Twitter” results, it seems like Singaporeans love their football and getting in on the conversations about disasters. Singaporeans are also big on news, using Twitter as a real-time information network to stay on top of the latest stories and trends.
Be it the Malaysian Airlines crashes, the coup in Thailand, or the world’s biggest sporting event — the World Cup — Singaporeans took to Twitter to air their views.
As 2014 comes to a close, here’s what was popular in the Twitter universe in Singapore.
GOLDEN TWEET
Ellen’s Oscars selfie is the undisputed ‘Golden Tweet’ of the year globally, with over 3 million retweets. Singapore’s “Golden Tweet” however, with 18,000 retweets was one by user @MuhdHaidee featuring an image of Baymax from the animated film Big Hero 6.
MOMENTS
According to results released by Twitter, the Thai coup on June 1 was the most talked about moment of the year in Singapore. Coming in a close second was March 16, when the Malaysian government announced the search for Flight MH370 along with 25 countries, as well as investigations into the pilot and co-pilot of the flight. By that point, the plane had already been missing for eight days.
Football proved to be the favourite sporting topic of Singaporeans, making half of the top 10 peaks in Twitter conversations among Singaporeans. Be it the FIFA World Cup, or the Premier League, Singaporeans loved talking about “the beautiful game” this year.
Out of the top 20 Singaporean Twitter accounts, four belong to recording artistes, singers and entertainers, namely Wiltay, JJ Lin, Stefanie Sun and Nicole Chen. Humorous Twitter accounts, belong to Mr Brown, Mr OtakuComedy and the novelty account SoSingaporean also featured in the top 20.
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had a popular year on Twitter as well, giving Singaporeans behind-the-scenes access into his life — be it a selfie with his wax figure at Madame Tussauds or with his Malaysian counterpart Najib Razak.
