SINGAPORE — St Andrew’s Cathedral will be closed for more than two weeks from 11.59pm on Wednesday (March 18), after a male member of its congregation tested positive for Covid-19.
In a notice that was posted on its website, the Anglican cathedral — located next to City Hall MRT Station — said that it had received information of the infection on Wednesday afternoon.
“We regret to inform (you) that a member of our church has been confirmed to have Covid-19 infection and is currently warded in hospital,” it said in its statement.
It added that the man had attended the 9am English service on March 15 which was held in the Cathedral New Sanctuary. This area is a space in the basement, based on information from its website.
The man had no symptoms of illness and passed the pre-service precautionary screening that comprised health and travel declaration and temperature checks, the statement read.
The cathedral said that if members of the church receive a call on contact tracing from the Ministry of Health (MOH), they should call MOH to seek verification of the authenticity of the call.
Late last week, the Catholic Church in Singapore reversed its decision to resume Masses after the World Health Organization declared the Covid-19 situation a pandemic.
And on Monday, the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) said that the closure of mosques across the country will be extended until March 26. This was on top of an earlier announcement of a five-day closure of all mosques islandwide from March 13.
