Psychological burden weighs down patients with diabetes: Study

SINGAPORE — A survey has shown that the psychological burden of diabetes remains high, despite a better understanding and management of the condition.

The study, by pharmaceutical company Bayer, involved 150 diabetes patients and caregivers.

More than 70 per cent of those surveyed believe they have to give up or have given up many things in life because of diabetes.

There is a strong association between poorly-controlled diabetes and depression, which in turn can create significant obstacles to effective diabetes management.

Speaking at the annual World Diabetes Day event today, Parliamentary Secretary for Health Faishal Ibrahim said early detection is crucial in managing diabetes.

He said: “In Singapore, about half of all people with diabetes are unaware of their condition. So we must encourage everyone, especially those who are overweight, or have a family history of diabetes, and are at higher risk, to go for regular screening for diabetes.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
