SINGAPORE — Infrastructure consultancy Surbana Jurong on Monday (Dec 28) announced it has appointed Mr Chaly Mah as its chairman. He will succeed Mr Liew Mun Leong, who retired in September amid intense public scrutiny of the court case surrounding his former domestic helper.
The appointment of Mr Mah, 64, will take effect from Jan 1 next year.
Surbana Jurong said that his appointment came after its board approved a recommendation from the company’s executive resource and compensation committee.
Mr Mah is also the chairman of several other entities, including the Singapore Tourism Board and the Singapore Accountancy Commission.
He sits on the boards of various government agencies and companies such as the Singapore Economic Development Board, Monetary Authority of Singapore and real estate firm CapitaLand.
He retired in 2016 as chief executive officer (CEO) of Deloitte Southeast Asia and chairman of Deloitte Singapore after nearly four decades with the professional services firm.
Mr Mah said that he was deeply honoured and humbled to be appointed chairman of Surbana Jurong.
He added that he looked forward to working with the board and management to “advance the group into a leading global player”.
Mr Tan Gee Paw, a long-serving Surbana Jurong board director, said: “The board was pleased that Chaly agreed to join us and serve as chairman because we see his experience and vision as critical to continuing the journey that Surbana Jurong started under Liew Mun Leong’s leadership.
“Chaly’s leadership credentials and his desire to see Surbana Jurong continue its growth journey, delivering sustainable social and economic impact for our clients, appeal to us all.”
Mr Wong Heang Fine, group CEO of Surbana Jurong, said Mr Mah’s deep experience and insights would benefit the firm greatly as it continues expanding its portfolio of specialty consulting skills and capabilities for the built environment.
Mr Mah’s appointment comes more than three months after Mr Liew, 74, stepped down from his various public service and business roles.
Mr Liew and his family came under the public glare after the High Court in September acquitted their former domestic worker, Ms Parti Liyani, of stealing S$34,000 worth of items from them.
On Sept 10, Mr Liew said that he decided to bring forward his retirement from Surbana Jurong, Changi Airport Group, Temasek Foundation and Temasek International as he did not wish his “situation to be a distraction to their respective boards, management and staff, amid their many critical priorities”.
