The police received a report from a victim who was cheated by a "woman", after he was asked to make an advance payment into a bank account in exchange for sexual services.
After the payment was made, the "woman" allegedly could not be contacted, the police said in a press release on Wednesday (Dec 23).
“Preliminary investigations revealed that a teenager is believed to have masqueraded as a woman on online platform Locanto to cheat and is involved in other similar cases islandwide,” they added.
The teenager was arrested on Tuesday and is expected to be charged on Wednesday under Section 420 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, he may be jailed up to 10 years and receive a fine.
The authorities take a serious view of persons who may be involved in scams and frauds, and perpetrators will be dealt with in accordance with the law, the police said.
