SINGAPORE — The 51-year-old driver of a car that crashed into a stall at Marine Terrace market has been arrested for causing grievous hurt through a negligent act.
The incident at Blk 50A Marine Terrace on Saturday (Dec 9) afternoon left three people, aged between 30 to 50 years old, injured. The three casualties — one of whom was unconscious — were sent to Changi General Hospital, the police said in a statement on Saturday.
TODAY understands that the driver was not drink driving when the incident happened, and the car may have experienced a mechanical fault. There were two passengers in the car at the time of the incident.
Former food stall owner Goh Seng Koon, 74, was sitting and chatting with an egg seller in the market when he heard a loud crash at about 12.30pm. "It sounded like a fridge falling, and a few people starting shouting for help," said Mr Goh.
The Marine Terrace resident later realised that a white car had rammed into a flower stall, hitting the female boss and her stall assistant whom he knew.
Mr Goh said the flower boss was lying unconscious, and the stall assistant was seen with a bloodied leg.
"Thankfully the morning market crowd was thin at the time. There is usually a lot of people here in the morning," he told TODAY.

He identified the flower vendor, who is also 58, as Ms Yeo Lee Eng. "She flew to the other side, and she is having her spine checked due to the impact," he said. Her shop assistant Mr Toh Cheng Hai, who is in his 60s, was also injured, with wounds on his face and leg, Mr Ang said.
The third casualty is an Indonesian domestic helper who was buying flowers at the time of the incident, he added.

A vegetable stall owner in his 70s, who only wanted to be known as Mr Tan, said: "They just updated us that the lady boss of the flower stall who was sent unconscious to the hospital has regained consciousness. She had fainted due to shock."
He added: "The impact sounded very heavy. I was sorting some vegetables when I heard it. I was very shocked myself and went to take a look."

Marine Terrace resident Khairizal Riz heard the bang from his 15th storey unit at Blk 52, and went to take a look. He saw the shop assistant lying conscious on the ground in a pool of blood. “His condition seemed more critical and I tried to help him up,” said Mr Khairizal, a 50-year-old odd-job worker.
Mr Chua, 70, a deliveryman who is familiar with the stall owners at the market, said he could not figure out how the car managed to slide straight into the stall without hitting the many metal barriers surrounding the Marine Terrace market. "It is very strange how this can happen," he said.

The police were alerted to the incident at 12.34pm. Police investigations are ongoing.

This is the second incident in three days that a car accident had left multiple casualties.
On Thursday, a 41-year-old man was arrested for suspected drink-driving after a multi-vehicle crash injured four pedestrians along Tanjong Pagar Road.
Insurance agent Lim Kwong Fei, 41, was at the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz, which allegedly veered right on a straight road, mounted the centre divider and ploughed into four pedestrians who were standing on the centre divider.
He was charged in court on Friday.
