Yang Yin trial begins

The criminal trial of Yang Yin, the ex-tour guide embroiled in a long-standing tussle over a wealthy widow’s assets, begins on Monday. He faces 349 criminal charges, including more than 300 charges of immigration offences and of falsifying receipts of his music and dance school to gain permanent residency status here. The 42-year-old Chinese national also faces two counts of criminal breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating S$1.1 million from 89-year-old widow Madam Chung Khin Chun. But those two charges will be heard later.

Tower Transit to test peak hour capability

A day after it started bus operations, Tower Transit’s proficiency will be put to the test with the full peak-hour loads on Monday. Singapore’s third public transport operator will have 94 buses on the road on Monday, up from 62 buses on Sunday. The bulk of its hires are existing drivers of the bus services it has taken over. The first nine bus services it has rolled out, which SMRT used to run, are service numbers 77, 106, 173, 177, 189, 941, 945, 947 and 990.

HDB applications close

Applications for this month’s Housing and Development Board’s (HDB) sales launch closes at 11.59pm on Monday. Almost 9,000 flats are up for sale, with 25 per cent of the new units in Ang Mo Kio and Bedok. In all, 3,770 Build-to-Order flats and 5,170 Sale of Balance flats were launched in the HDB’s second exercise of the year. The next BTO launch is slated for August, with about 4,810 new units in Hougang, Sembawang, Tampines and Yishun.

ESM Goh Chok Tong in Tokyo for conference

Emeritus Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong is in Tokyo on Monday to attend the 22nd International Conference on The Future of Asia, “Rising to Global Challenges and Realising Asia’s Potential”, organised by Nikkei. He will deliver the keynote speech for the conference in the morning.

First hurricane to threaten US in 2016

South Carolina is bracing itself for tropical storm Bonnie, the first hurricane of the year to threaten the United States. The centre of the storm was forecasted to cross the South Carolina coast on Sunday night (US local time). According to the US National Hurricane Centre, Bonnie was packing maximum sustained winds exceeding 70 kilometres per hour.

Thundery showers are expected over many areas in the predawn hours and early morning, with temperatures ranging from 25°C to 33°C.
