Thursday is the last day of operations for Funan DigitalLife Mall, a mall synonymous with computers and IT accessories, as well as cameras and camera equipment. After Thursday, it will undergo a three-year renovation period in the hopes of becoming an “aspirational lifestyle destination” and an “experiential creative hub”.
Penang Chief Minister to be charged with corruption
Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng will be charged with two counts of corruption on Thursday over the purchase of a bungalow below market price. The purchase of the RM2.8 million (S$0.94 million) property was allegedly linked to the sale of a piece of land in Penang. The opposition Democratic Action Party (DAP) secretary-general was arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) on Wednesday evening after he chaired the state’s executive committee meeting.
Duterte to be inaugurated as Philippines’ president
Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte will be inaugurated as the Philippines’ 16th president on Thursday and will serve as the country’s leader for six years. In what is a first in the Philippines’ recent history, the media has been banned from covering his inauguration. However, the ceremony will live-streamed on Facebook. Mr Duterte won the May 9 presidential elections in a landslide after campaigning largely on a platform of ending rampant crime and corruption.
Boris Johnson, Theresa May expected to announce leadership bids
Former London mayor Boris Johnson and Britain’s Home secretary Theresa May are expected to announce their bids for the leadership of the ruling Conservative party on Thursday to succeed outgoing prime minister David Cameron. Mr Cameron had announced his intention to resign following last week’s disastrous Brexit vote. The nominations, which opened on Wednesday will close at noon local time on Thursday. The results will be announced on September 9. The new prime minister will be tasked with leading negotiations over Britain’s new relationship with the European Union.
