SINGAPORE — A new South Korean drama series airing on Netflix has sparked some excitement online because it features Singapore in parts of the show.

The drama, Little Women, is loosely adapted from Louisa May Alcott's classic novel of the same name. South Korean publication Korea JoongAng Daily reported that it now ranks as the top series on Netflix in several markets, including Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan and Vietnam.

In the latest episode aired last Sunday (Sept 25), some of the scenes were set in Singapore.

Actress Kim Go Eun’s character Oh In-joo was arriving in Singapore at night and the camera panned to views of the Marina Bay skyline.

When her character reached Fullerton Hotel, she was awed by the grandiose of the hotel and its decor, and was greeted by the hotel manager — played by Singaporean actor Adrian Pang.

They exchanged a few words in the scene, as he took Kim’s character around the hotel.

Some viewers were thrilled by the appearance of Mr Pang, calling him “Adrian Oppa”. "Oppa" is a Korean term of endearment to address an older man.

Mr Pang, a veteran in the film and theatre circles, famously starred in the Glen Goei-directed movie Forever Fever in 1998.

He is now co-founder of theatre company Pangdemonium and playing Singapore's former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew in The LKY Musical, staged by Singapore Repertory Theatre and into the last week of its run.

This was not the first time that viewers are “simping” for (slang for fawning over) Mr Pang.

It happened before when a TikTok video was put out by The Straits Times last month of him promoting the National Day Parade.

He directed the song-and-dance show segment of the parade this year. The video posted on Aug 8 received 17,000 likes and resulted in some edited clips done by fans of Mr Pang on TikTok.

Viewers who watched Little Women also spotted Singaporean actor Joshua Tan as the hotel receptionist, with some affectionately calling him “Recruit Ken Chow”, after the role he played in Jack Neo’s movie Ah Boys to Men.

Other appearances from Singaporean actors and actresses included: Actress Bridget Fernandez from Channel 5 drama Tanglin as a hotel employee, actor Ebi Shankara from Channel 5 drama Kin as a waiter, actor and host Joshua Lim and model Regina Lim as employees at an orchid auction as well as actors Benjamin Josiah Tan and Aaron Charles Mossadeg as security guards.

In the show's behind-the-scenes segment, Singaporean actor Ebi Shankara engaged in some light-hearted banter with Kim and Wi Ha-joon (Squid Game), who also starred in Little Women.

Sharp-eyed viewers also noticed that Kim’s character took a long roundabout route when taking the MRT to flee in a scene.

She went from MacPherson MRT Station to Stadium MRT Station to Expo station near Changi to walking towards Fullerton Bay Hotel, then walking along Clarke Quay and Gardens by the Bay, before reaching her final destination at a condominium that was supposedly at Keppel Bay.

Even though these scenes showed more of Singapore, they pointed out that the route made no sense whatsoever.

One commented: "Taps out at Expo, ends up in Sentosa Cove."

In this South Korean version of Little Women, it is a mystery-thriller that tells the story of three sisters who grew up in poverty facing off against a rich and powerful family.

@sakuradaydream I struggled to take this episode seriously cuz I’ve never seen the yassification of Singapore before #fyp #littlewomenkdrama ♬ Ariana w are you doing here hahahahaha - 𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐕𝐈𝐒 FAN
