SINGAPORE — US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will hold a historic summit in Sentosa on Tuesday (June 12). Here are the latest developments.

SINGAPORE — US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will hold a historic summit in Sentosa on Tuesday (June 12). Here are the latest developments:

TUESDAY, JUNE 12

*United States President Donald Trump says US will end the "very expensive" war games with South Korea. Mr Trump considers such exercises "very provocative" in light of what is trying to achieve with North Korea.

* United States President Donald Trump said the historic summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had gone "better than anybody could have expected", before they signed a document following talks on ways to end a nuclear standoff on the Korean Peninsula.

* High-powered diplomacy is an energy consuming affair. To refuel, the United States and North Korean delegations in Sentosa will be tucking into a scrumptious working lunch with Korean stuffed cucumber, beef short rib confit, and soy braised cod fish. For dessert, they will have a choice of dark chocolate tartlet ganache, vanilla ice-cream with cherry coulis, and tarte tropezienne.

*Trump, after meeting Kim Jong-un 1-on-1 for 45 minutes, predicts the two of them 'will solve a big problem, a big dilemma'. Kim says there will be challenges ahead but will work with Trump.

* United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un shook hands and smiled as they started a historic summit in Sentosa on Tuesday (June 12), just months after they traded insults and threats of nuclear war. "It's my honour, we will have a terrific relationship, no doubt," Mr Trump said as he sat down with Mr Kim in the Capella Hotel. Mr Kim said in response: "The way to get here was not easy...but we overcome all the obstacles to get here."

* Both leaders have arrived in Sentosa: Mr Trump's motorcade left the Shangri-La Hotel around 8am and arrived at the Capella Hotel in Sentosa around 8.15am. Mr Kim's motorcade left the St Regis Hotel around 8.15am, and arrived at the summit venue around 8.35am.

* Deal or no deal: Both the White House and the top US diplomat Mike Pompeo have raised expectations for the summit, saying talks with Pyongyang have moved more quickly than expected. Mr Trump sounded a similar note in a tweet on Tuesday morning, hours before meeting Mr Kim.

 

 

* Host's take: In an interview with CNN, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said he believes that both sides do want to hammer out a deal. Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan likewise expressed a sense of "realistic optimism" about the talks in an interview with BBC.

* Tight security in and around Sentosa: Heightened security measures are in place for the summit. Maritime patrols will also be conducted in the waters around Sentosa as the high-profile summit gets underway.

 

MONDAY, JUNE 11

* Trump-Kim one-on-one meeting to last 45 minutes: White House: After their one-on-one meeting, accompanied only by translators, the two leaders and their senior officials will have a 90-minute expanded bilateral meeting. They would have a working lunch at about 11.30am.

* Hours before historic meeting, Kim goes on downtown tour: Mr Kim's motorcade left the St Regis Hotel — where he is putting up during the summit — at around 9.10pm. He then made his way to his first stop, Gardens by the Bay, before adjourning to the nearby Marina Bay Sands, and to the Jubilee Bridge.

* Trump thanks Singapore for hospitality, professionalism and friendship: Meeting Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the Istana on Monday, Mr Trump expressed his appreciation for Singapore's help in hosting the historic summit, adding: "We do appreciate your hospitality, your professionalism, and your friendship." 

* PM Lee, President Trump to meet, have working lunch: According to the White House, the official meetings and lunch will be held at the Istana from noon to about 2pm.

* "Magnificent and beautiful" Singapore: A report in North Korean state media KCNA said Mr Kim was "very pleased to visit the magnificent and beautiful Republic of Singapore". State television KCTV also ran a 7-minute clip of Mr Kim's visit to Singapore.

* Working group meeting: US and North Korean diplomats began a working group meeting at 10am at the Ritz Carlton hotel. According to Yonhap news agency, Ambassador Sung Kim, the US State Department's top Korea expert, will meet the North's vice foreign minister Choe Son-hui to try to come up with a draft agreement to be presented to Mr Trump and Mr Kim.
