SINGAPORE — Two Singaporean men were charged with kidnapping a 79-year-old woman in the district court this morning (Jan 10).

Heng Chen Boon, a 50-year-old credit card salesman, and 41-year-old odd-job worker Lee Sze Yong are alleged to have kidnapped Mdm Ng Lye Poh on Wednesday.

Lee is accused of abducting Mdm Ng between 10.30am and 1.02pm along Hougang Ave 2 on that day with the intent to hold her for ransom.

Heng is accused of abetting Lee in wrongfully confining Mdm Ng for ransom on that day between 8.30pm and midnight in the vicinity of Sembawang Park. He is alleged to have intentionally aided Lee to wrongfully confine Mdm Ng in a vehicle.

Her son, Mr Lim Hock Chee, the Chief Executive of Singapore’s third-largest supermarket operator Sheng Siong, lodged a police report at about 1pm on Wednesday after receiving a phone call from an unknown person.

The two men are alleged to have asked for a ransom of S$20 million.

However, a S$2 million ransom, which was later recovered by the police, was paid to the kidnappers after negotiations, said the police at a press conference yesterday.Police arrested the two men within 12 hours after the report was made.

The two suspects are remanded at Police Cantonment Complex. The prosecution has asked for permission to bring the two suspects out for investigations which the court granted. They will return to court next Friday.

If the two men are convicted, they face the death penalty or life imprisonment with caning.
