SINGAPORE — A criminal lawyer with more than 20 years of experience was charged in court on Wednesday (Sept 21) with committing a hit-and-run along the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE) last year.

Gregory John Fong Mun Yung, 49, faces three charges under the Road Traffic Act.

The charges are for dangerous driving causing grievous hurt, failing to stop after an accident, and failing to render assistance by leaving the scene.

Court documents showed that the incident took place on June 13 last year at around 6pm.

While driving along the KPE near the East Coast Parkway Exit, Fong allegedly overtook a motorcyclist at close proximity from the left.

The 42-year-old rider, who was travelling on the second lane of the three-lane road, suffered serious injuries. Court documents did not give more details on the nature of these injuries.

Fong then allegedly left the scene despite being required under the law to render help.

He will return to court on Oct 12 and remains out on bail of S$10,000.

If convicted of dangerous driving causing grievous hurt, he could be jailed for at least a year and up to five years.

He can also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for eight years.

Those convicted of leaving an accident scene without rendering assistance, or failing to stop after an accident, can be fined up to S$1,000 or jailed for up to three months, or punished with both.

Records from the Ministry of Law’s website show that Fong was admitted to the Singapore Bar in 2000 and is currently a director at Fong & Fong LLC.

Some of the criminal cases he has taken on include a man who raped his girlfriend's 14-year-old daughter, as well as a bicycle shop owner who molested two women after giving them massages and offering “exorcism rituals”.
