SINGAPORE — The wet weather is forecast to continue for the rest of this month with the daily minimum temperature possibly dipping below 23°C, though there may be a a few warm days with highs of around 34°C, the Meteorological Service Singapore (MSS) said on Tuesday (Aug 16).

In its weather update, MSS said that short-duration moderate to heavy thundery showers can be expected between the late morning and afternoon on most days over the next two weeks.

It added that compared to the first fortnight of the month, more thundery showers are expected in the second half of August.

“The prevailing Southwest Monsoon conditions are forecast to persist over Singapore and the surrounding region with the low-level winds to continue blowing from the southeast or southwest,” said MSS.

During this time, MSS noted that the convergence of winds in the surrounding vicinity could bring about thundery showers over the island on a few nights.

In addition, Sumatra squalls — an organised line of thunderstorm developing over Sumatra or the Straits of Malacca — may bring about widespread thundery showers with occasional gusty winds in the pre-dawn and morning on a few days.

“Overall, more rainfall is expected in the second half of August 2022 compared to the first half of the month. The overall rainfall for August 2022 will likely be above-average over most parts of the island,” said MSS.

The weather agency added that on most days, the daily temperature is forecast to range between 24°C and 33°C.

On a few rainy days, however, the daily minimum temperature may dip to below 23°C.

“Warm and humid night with minimum night-time temperatures of up to 28°C can (also) be expected on some days, particularly in the eastern and southern coastal areas when prevailing winds blowing from the southeast bring warm, humid air from the surrounding seas,” said MSS.
