SINGAPORE — A 64-year-old woman was arrested on Wednesday (May 8) for allegedly stealing money from a visually impaired tissue seller in Yishun late last month.

The incident occurred on April 30 at about 7.20pm at an underpass between Yishun MRT and Northpoint City, according to a Facebook post by a witness.

Ms Jessica Vincent, who posted about the incident on Labour Day, said that she heard the tissue seller shouting for help.

She also uploaded a photo of the seller sitting on the ground in a pink baju kurung, and a photo of the alleged thief, who was wearing a red tee shirt.

Ms Vincent said that the photo of the alleged thief was taken by a female bystander who had given chase after hearing the seller’s cries.

“This poor blind lady has been sitting probably the whole day… how could any human to do this despite how poor one can be?,” Ms Vincent wrote in her post.

Ms Vincent later added a comment to her post saying the bystander did not manage to detain the alleged thief. The bystander also told Ms Vincent that she had briefly argued with the alleged thief, who claimed she did not steal the victim’s bag.

“I went over to check and comfort the blind lady. Everything happened too fast. I wish I could have done more,” said Ms Vincent.

She added: “I have made (a) police report… and police contacted me and said that they will look into this.”

On Thursday (May 9), the police said that they received a report on the incident last Thursday.

Through ground enquiries, officers from the Woodlands Police Division tracked down and arrested the suspect on May 8 at Woodlands Street 12.

Police investigations are ongoing.

If found guilty, the suspect could be jailed up to three years, or fined, or both.
