Woman charged with sneezing at another woman in Ion Orchard in April

SINGAPORE — A 46-year-old woman was charged in a district court on Wednesday (April 22) with sneezing in another woman’s direction at the Ion Orchard shopping mall entrance and shouting “Shut up” at her.

Sun Szu-Yen, a Taiwanese, is accused of causing harassment to Ms Devika Rani Muthu Krishna at about 4.45pm on April 12.

Separately, she was charged with throwing a model globe, a plastic chair, a vacuum cleaner, a glass bottle and a few pencils from her third-storey home at Fifth Avenue Condominium on June 4 last year.

The condominium is located in the upscale Bukit Timah area. Court documents did not state why she allegedly did this.

On Wednesday, she told the court through an interpreter that she would like to claim trial to her charges, but will not hire a lawyer as she can defend herself.

She will return to court on April 29 and remains out on bail.

If convicted of causing harassment under the Protection from Harassment Act, she could be jailed up to six months, fined up to S$5,000, or both.

Committing a rash act endangering the personal safety of others carries a similar punishment.
