SINGAPORE — This year’s Singapore Garden Festival will feature the world’s largest species of orchid, the Tiger Orchid (Grammatophyllum Speciosum), as part of the competition orchids’ showcase.
The plant, which belongs to John Elliot, a member of the Orchid Society of South East Asia, stands tall at 2m in height and weighs an estimated 300kg.
Each spray of flowers is an average of 2 metres in length. At least four pairs of hands were required in lifting it onto a truck before it was driven to the Flower Dome, where a forklift was then used to transport it to its eventual display spot. Visitors can take the opportunity to see the Tiger Orchid in bloom as it only flowers once every few years.
Another visual treat in the Flower Dome is the Orchid Kaleidoscope, where a variety of orchids line a 10m tall structure — the largest ever built within the Dome.
A biennial event into its fifth instalment, the Singapore Garden Festival 2014 will run from this Saturday to August 24 at the Gardens by the Bay.
