SINGAPORE — While the International Champions Cup (ICC) is set to enthrall fans when it makes its first appearance here from July 25 to 29, football enthusiasts will get their own kickabout — and more — during the week with the launch of the inaugural Singapore Football Week (SFW).
Held in conjunction with the ICC, the SFW — which will cater for all ages and backgrounds — will see 26 different events held around the island from July 22 to 29. These include competitions, family-friendly festivals and non-traditional games such as console games, foosball and table football.
Sport Singapore (SportSG) have tied up with 22 partners for the SFW, and chief executive officer Lim Teck Yin hopes to attract non-football fans to find out more about the sport, and to start playing it. They are aiming to attract 100,000 participants to the week-long festival.
“SFW is all about encouraging people to play,” said Mr Lim at the launch of the event yesterday at the SportSG auditorium.
“We intend to grow SFW from year to year to encourage people to play and build the relationships that an event like this affords.”
The SFW will also leverage on the buzz and excitement created by the ICC — which will be held here annually until 2020 — as Mr Lim said the “wheels were put in motion” for the SFW once that deal was confirmed.
“This is a platform to leverage on the excitement of the ICC,” he said. “We want to leverage our investments in marquee events to have an impact on Singaporeans.”
The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) is a key partner for the SFW, and its president, Mr Lim Kia Tong, said: “This is an excellent idea… we are planning certain activities (on our end to contribute).”
SportSG’s Mr Lim added: “SFW is going to get better because these guys, our partners, have all the ideas… I think the football fraternity is a passionate bunch of people who want to chip in.”
According to SportSG, the concept will also be expanded to include other sports, with a Tennis Week to be held in conjunction with the WTA Finals Singapore in October. Mr Lim said yesterday that they will explore the possibility of having more of such complementary events in the future. TEO TENG KIAT
