SINGAPORE — Singapore national table tennis player Isabelle Li, a two time SEA Games singles silver medallist, could be eliminated from the women’s singles at the SEA Games after a 3-2 loss to Vietnam’s Nguyen Thi Nga in the group stage today (June 3).
Only the top players from each of the four groups will advance to tomorrow’s semi finals.
While Li had defeated Myanmar’s Khin Kaung San 3-0 yesterday, a loss to Nguyen means that she will only advance to the next round if she beats Laos’ Seangdavieng Douangpanya tomorrow, and Nguyen loses to Khin Kaung San in her final group match.
“I think my chances of getting into the main draw has ended here,” said a visibly disappointed Li. “I wasn’t feeling good physically today and made a lot of mistakes. She played well today and was a lot more fierce today.
“I wasn’t able to bring my form on court today and that gave her confidence.”
Teammate Feng Tianwei is still on track for gold, cruising to a 3-0 victory over Indonesia’s Novita Oktariyani in her second group match today.
