Mok pulls out of Commonwealth Games

SINGAPORE – Top local marathoner Mok Ying Ren has pulled out of his event tomorrow (July 27) at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Mok could not recover in time from an injury to his right shin he sustained more than a month ago during training and made the decision to withdraw from his race.

The 26-year-old doctor made history when he became the first Singaporean to win the men’s marathon event at the South-east Asian Games at last year’s Myanmar Games, and would have been the first Singaporean to compete in the marathon at the Commonwealth Games.

Said Mok, who has not been running for a week prior to arriving at Glasgow: “I did cross-training as an alternative and was quietly positive of my chances when I arrived as I was not feeling any pain. Unfortunately, the pain recurred after a couple of easy runs.”

After consulting with the medical team, coaches, and officials, Mok made the decision to withdraw from the event to not jeopardize his long-term future in the sport. “I believe my body is telling me that it is not ready for 42km of pounding and I would risk long-term consequences if I do proceed.”

Since winning the men’s triathlon gold medal at the 2007 SEA Games in Pattaya, Mok has been plagued by injuries, including a foot problem that kept him out of the 2011 SEA Games in Indonesia.

He aims to be the first Singaporean male runner to qualify for the marathon event at the Olympics come 2016 at Rio de Janeiro.
