SINGAPORE – Some 320 young athletes were awarded the Singapore Olympic Foundation (SOF)-Peter Lim Scholarship in a ceremony held at the Singapore Expo on Monday. Started in 2010 by entrepreneur Peter Lim to help promising young athletes with financial limitations to achieve their goals in their respective sport, and provide financial support to national athletes, the scholarship disbursed a total of S$936,000 this year – a 25 per cent increase from the S$746,000 that was handed out in 2012.

The foundation had received a total of 857 applications from 138 schools this year, with 320 athletes from 93 schools handed bursaries worth $S1,000, S$2,000, S$3,000, and S$10,000 in the primary, secondary, tertiary and high performance category respectively. One of the recipients was swimmer Danny Yeo, who was awarded S$10,000 under the high performance category. Yeo, a second-time awardee, had set a new national 100m freestyle record at last week’s Singapore National Swimming Championship, and the 23-year-old is gunning to better his three-gold medal haul from the 2011 Palembang SEA Games at this year’s regional event in Myanmar. Said Yeo: “I will be using the money for overseas training camps and the scholarship has motivated me to do better to reach my goals.”
