12 start-up projects up for co-funding on StarHub platform

SINGAPORE — A device that alerts drivers to nearby cyclists through FM radio, an electricity-free smartphone speaker made from a single piece of bamboo and a trendy mechanical smartwatch hybrid — these were some of the projects showcased yesterday at the launch of StarHub’s Crowdtivate.

Crowdtivate is a crowdfunding platform that aims to help entrepreneurs and artists create awareness and raise funds from consumers for their projects.

StarHub, which announced the beta launch of Crowdtivate in April, yesterday said it has selected 12 projects, out of 400 proposals received, to be featured on the platform.

Members of the public will be able to co-fund any of the 12 projects on the platform and, depending on the amount contributed, supporters will receive their rewards in the form of a product or service.

In curating the list, interesting projects were identified, said Mr Stephen Lee, head of StarHub i3, the telco’s business innovation unit. “These past three months were spent with the entrepreneurs developing a strong marketing and promotional campaign that we believe will inspire the crowdfunding community.”

To enhance the success rate of these projects, Crowdtivate provides entrepreneurs with mentorship and consultancy to create good campaigns. Selected projects may also receive additional assistance, such as marketing support, invention support and start-up funding.

“They have been very supportive of our project and have offered a lot of advice and tips along the way,” said Mr Ray Teng, a Crowdtivator and co-founder of WaryBee, a wearable panic button that works with a smartphone app to trigger distress calls.

Mr Teng, whose project was the first to be featured on the platform, said it would be “crazy to not capitalise” on the opportunity. The WaryBee team aims to raise S$50,000.

Mr Joel Chue, co-founder of SaySelfiee, a voice-guided mobile app that helps users take “perfect selfies”, said he chose Crowdtivate because “we are a local company and we want to support their vision”. They aim to raise S$10,000. Ng You Qian
