SINGAPORE — Bringing a large number of videos to keep the children entertained while on long trips can be tricky: Smartphones, even with expandable storage, easily run out of space.

The Seagate Wireless Plus’ new 2TB version promises to make sharing large amounts of data among multiple devices simple and fast.

The Wireless Plus is easy to operate: Just press the power button on the side of the drive and give it about two minutes to start broadcasting a Wi-Fi signal.

Transferring files to it is done via USB3.0, but that content can then be browsed on mobile devices via the Seagate Media app available for iOS and Android. In the app, all media are sorted into folders such as videos, photos and music, and streaming is done from within the app, like your own cloud on the go. However, not all audio and video formats are supported.

You can connect up to seven devices to the Wireless Plus, each of them streaming something different at the same time.

However, the wireless connection only offers smooth streaming of HD content for up to three devices, and connecting more devices means a shorter battery life for the Wireless Plus. Seagate promises 10 hours of battery life, but depending on what we were doing, we could get between six and eight hours — still enough for most drives up the Causeway and even some plane rides.

While support for more file formats would be great, what’s best about the Wireless Plus is how you can use it like a router: You can connect it via Wi-Fi to the Internet, and it can then broadcast that signal to other devices, allowing you access to the Internet and your storage at the same time.

The Seagate Wireless Plus is now available at S$299 for the 2TB version.
