Tell your own super hero stories with Disney Infinity

SINGAPORE — Frozen’s Elsa challenging Captain Jack Sparrow in a car race might still seem outlandish to some, but for many children (and adults) this has been just another exciting day in Disney Infinity, a video game-toy hybrid where Disney characters can interact in user-created worlds. And all that is going to get super-heroic with the introduction of Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes, the second edition of the hit video game released last year.

Announced at the launch on Wednesday in Los Angeles, the new edition will feature some of Marvel’s super heroes and will also feature a new Toy Box mode that is said to be easier for players to create and share their levels and mini-games.

“Marvel Super Heroes fit perfectly into Disney Infinity, and with them we are pushing the platform’s limits of creativity and imagination,” said Mr John Blackburn, vice-president and general manager of Avalanche Software, developers of the game.

“We’ve enhanced and redesigned the gameplay to match the Marvel characters, while also making it easier than ever for players to express and share their own creativity.”

More than 20 characters from the Marvel universe will join the Disney Infinity family, and so far six, all from the Avengers, have been revealed: Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, Captain America, Hulk and Hawkeye.

While no other characters have been officially announced, the game’s trailer shown at the launch did tease Rocket Raccoon and Groot, from Marvel’s upcoming Guardians Of The Galaxy movie, villains MODOK and Loki, as well as everyone’s friendly neighbourhood superhero, Spider-Man.

While it might be easy for cynical comic fans to dismiss this as yet another children’s toy, Mr Brian Michael, writer of the Ultimate Spider-Man, Daredevil, Avengers and X-Men comic books will be creating original storylines for the quest portion of the game.

If you are more of a Disney fan, the company will also be launching new characters from Disney’s other franchises for Disney Infinity.

The game will also launch, for the first time, on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 next-generation consoles, but gamers who have previous games on their old consoles can port their progress over. The game will also be released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii U, PC and the iOS. The older characters from the first edition of Disney Infinity will also be compatible with the new version and vice versa.

This announcement does leave one thing hanging: Disney famously also owns the Star Wars franchise and Star Wars figures in Disney Infinity just sounds amazing. A source has told The Wall Street Journal that a Star Wars version is in the works and with the Star Wars Episode VII movie due next year, it might not be too long till we can use the Force to take down Loki.

Disney Infinity: Marvel Super Heroes is expected to launch later this year.
