SINGAPORE — Sony’s long-awaited next generation console, the PlayStation 4 (PS4), will launch in Singapore in December this year, announced Sony today (Sept 18). The launch date coincides with other Asian countries, such as Malaysia, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea. No pricing details have been released, but the console will launch at US$399 (S$500) in the United States. This launch date is just one month after the Nov 15 launch date for North America and the Nov 29 launch date for Europe and Australia, and two months before the February launch for Sony’s home country Japan. In comparison, Sony’s previous iteration, the PlayStation 3, launched in Singapore four months after the console’s debut in Japan and the US. This means that Sony will be releasing the PlayStation last in their home country of Japan. At today's press conference, Sony also announced that its new 2000-series PlayStation Vita will be released in the Asia region in November, and Sony's new PlayStation Vita TV will be released in January next year. Pricing details for these products were also not announced. The press conference was held in Sony’s headquarters in Tokyo one day before the annual Tokyo Game Show from tomorrow to Sunday. In comparison, Microsoft’s competing next-generation console, the Xbox One, will be sold for US$499 (S$630) on Nov 22 in select North American and European markets, and will only be available in Asia late next year.
