Toshiba Satellite NB10t-A101S Touch review: An unassuming performer
SINGAPORE — New laptops are launched all the time and it can be hard to find one that stands out, especially at the lower end of the market. The Toshiba Satellite NB10t-A101S Touch might not have any features that make it a must-have, but there is just enough for it to be worth considering, especially since it costs less than S$700.
Powered by the Intel Celeron N2810 processor (2.0GHz), the Satellite is an unassuming laptop that can handle what you might need to do on the go.
Combined with 4GB of RAM and 500GB of hard disk space, it is able to perform most work on the move without any worries and even had no issues running some games.
While you will not be running programs that are graphically intensive on this machine, working with it — even on the lap — was comfortable as it chugged along happily without generating much heat or noise, even when rendering 3D graphics.
The Satellite’s plastic body weighs only 1.5kg and is 25.1mm at its thickest point — not the lightest or slimmest out there, but you can comfortably walk around a whole day with it in your bag.
What sets the Satellite apart from competitors in its price range is that its 11.6-inch widescreen WXGA (1,366 x 768) monitor is touch-enabled. Whether this is important is for you to decide: The Satellite comes with Windows 8, and the melding of touch interface and Windows is steadily improving. There was not much problem with touch accuracy when we used the touchscreen for navigation but, at times, it required a second press to register a click.
However, what hampers the use of the Satellite is its battery life. At three-and-a-half hours, it is quite a bit shorter than some other models. You might get three hours with some heavy usage, so you will want to bring the charging cable along for a long day out.
Furthermore, the keys on the keyboard do not have much travel distance, so it might feel unsatisfying hammering away at it. This might be due to how much Toshiba had squeezed into the chassis below. The keyboard also does not come with a backlight and has a different location for the tilde key — next to the spacebar — so it might take a while to get used to it.
The Toshiba Satellite NB10t-A101S Touch is a simple, solid performer. It has everything you might expect a basic laptop to have, and while it might not have the bells and whistles of some laptops out there and is not the slimmest or the lightest, it performs well. At this price, it might just be what you need.
The Toshiba Satellite NB10t-A101S Touch is on sale at S$679 and comes bundled with Norton Internet Security.
