Watch your drinking

SINGAPORE — Smartwatches and wearable technology may be buzzwords in the tech world, but no product has yet managed to catch the eye of the mass market. The Tokyoflash Kisai Intoxicated Silicone Watch is trying to do just that with its breathalyser function.

While it may not have all the bells and whistles of a smartwatch, nor the quirkiness of Tokyoflash’s weirdest watches, the new breathalyser feature could be a fun thing to have at parties, especially with the Chinese New Year festivities coming up.

Do note, however, that the makers have said the watch is designed for entertainment only; so as long as you have been drinking, you probably should not be driving.

The breathalyser, placed on the right side of the watch face (less convenient for left-handed users), is easy to use: You press and hold a button, wait for it to warm up, then open the sensor cap and breath into the opening. It is simple enough to operate especially if you are still somewhat sober. Otherwise, you might need a friend’s help.

A reading then shows you blood alcohol content, from 0 per cent all the way to 0.2 per cent — way above the legal limit in Singapore of 0.08 per cent, and not something you will hit especially if you are a lightweight like me. Sadly, it is not totally accurate, showing slightly positive readings even when I have not been drinking.

Unlike other Tokyoflash watches with inscrutable watch faces that take a long time to learn how to read, this does not: With some clever use of negative space, the Intoxicated is easy to read without sacrificing too much of Tokyoflash’s eccentric and eye-catching design.

But if you are too tipsy to read the watch, it is a good thing then that the watch face lights up when you use the breathalyser — green for sober, yellow for inebriated and red for drunk.

Still not confident you are sober? There is also a little game in the watch that tests your reaction time. Of course, if you do reach the stage where you are not confident of your sobriety, maybe it is time to stop drinking.

The Tokyoflash Kisai Intoxicated Silicone Watch is a little chunky due to the breathalyser, but it is not a heavy watch. It is available online at http://www.tokyoflash.com for US$149 (S$190).
