SINGAPORE - Thanks to Joseph Schooling's historic gold-medal win in the Rio Olympics 100m butterfly final, Singapore have risen up the medal standings at the Games.

The Republic are now 34th in the standings with one gold, as well as third among South-east Asian nations.

Thailand (16th spot) leads the region with two golds, a silver and a bronze, while Vietnam (26th) are currently second with one gold and one silver.

The other South-east Asian nations after Singapore are Indonesia (43rd), with two silvers, followed by Malaysia and the Philippines who are joint-48th with a silver each.

Schooling's gold is Singapore's first gold medal at the quadrennial Games and the highest sporting achievement by a Singaporean to date.

Prior to that, Singapore had won a silver in weightlifting through Tan Howe Liang at the 1960 Rome Games, a team silver from women's table tennis at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, and two bronzes by the women's table tennis squad (in the team event, as well as by Feng Tianwei in the singles).
