A car is not a necessity

There are young Singaporean parents these days who pamper their children. Parents need to train their children to be independent — for example, my neighbour taught her two children to get to school by taking a public bus from Woodlands to Bukit Timah. There are also school buses.
Owning a car is a luxury and not an necessity. Otherwise, does it mean that lower-income families must own cars too in order to care for their elderly and children?
I believed the Monetary Authority of Singapore is doing the right thing by tightening up on such loans. There are always other alternatives, such as public transport and instilling from an early age the discipline to leave home earlier.
