I join many Singaporeans in wishing ex-Premier Lee Kuan Yew all the best on his 90th birthday.

He has devoted his entire adulthood in service of the nation.

As he had put it, his overriding concern has been the betterment of his countrymen.

His charisma, forceful style of public speaking and eloquence were attributes that made it imperative for his party colleagues, particularly Cabinet ministers, to choose him as their spokesperson on major political issues or policies concerning the nation’s well-being.

With his vigour, calibre and determination to win over Singaporeans, he led a team of resourceful, resilient and tenacious Cabinet colleagues in facing up to and resolving many of the daunting challenges that beset a young nation, even its very survival.

As party leader, he did not buckle under pressure from within and outside Singapore.

Once he and his colleagues decided upon a course of action, he would see it through even at a cost to him and his party.

It was his indomitable spirit and willingness to do what others would deem improbable, or even impossible, that catapulted this island to become a bustling metropolis.

He opted sensibly and calmly for long-term benefits, even as the short-term pains seemed excruciating.

I have lived through all the major events that could have sent this red dot back to our backwater status but for the outstanding leadership of Mr Lee and his team. I salute this colossus among men.
