Look into shortage of motorcycle parking spaces in the CBD

I refer to Mr Varun Naidu’s letter, “Crack down on motorcyclists who ride on pavements” (Feb 18).

For many years, there have been insufficient parking spaces for motorcycles in the Central Business District (CBD).

When the Golden Shoe Car Park was still around, motorcyclists could park there. The shortage of parking spots became clear after the facility was demolished more than two years ago to make way for a new development.

Many commercial buildings in the city centre do not allow motorcycle parking.

As a result, motorcyclists who venture into the CBD have to circle the area to look for a parking spot to avoid being fined for illegal parking.

As a motorcyclist, I have often faced this problem.

It is worse for courier and food delivery riders who need to park briefly to drop off or pick up items. Most motorcyclists are mindful of the fines for parking illegally by the road or on pavements. Being served a ticket is enough to take away a day’s hard work on the road. No one in his right mind will do this.

I urge the authorities to look into the matter and provide more motorcycle parking spaces in the CBD. This will create a safer environment for all road users.
