Murals can bring culture to people

I refer to Ms Mallika Naguran’s commentary, “Bring culture to the people” (April 10), and the letter, “One way to remember kampungs” (April 11).

I refer to Ms Mallika Naguran’s commentary, “Bring culture to the people” (April 10), and the letter, “One way to remember kampungs” (April 11).

I wonder how many readers know of the murals behind a row of shops at Bukit Merah Lane 1, opposite Queensway Shopping Centre.

I chanced upon them once, and now look round them whenever I am in the area. They are just what was discussed in the commentary: Art and design as part of public living spaces.

The murals feature daily life in Singapore, past and present, carried out by different races, with food being predominant. Even a blond woman is depicted eating at a hawker centre.

The mission of this community effort, to “transform the heartlands into the artlands”, is commendable. Perhaps there are other hidden gems like this in Singapore, bringing life to otherwise mundane spaces. They may even serve a higher purpose of creating interest in art and culture, enticing more people to visit special exhibitions in museums.
