Prevention better than cure in Tekka liquor rule

Following the report “Tekka hawkers say new rule will be a double-whammy for them” (July 29), I was disappointed with some of the opinions expressed on 938LIVE regarding the restrictions on alcohol sale hours on Sundays at Tekka Food Centre.

Following the report “Tekka hawkers say new rule will be a double-whammy for them” (July 29), I was disappointed with some of the opinions expressed on 938LIVE regarding the restrictions on alcohol sale hours on Sundays at Tekka Food Centre.

Some callers viewed the earlier cut-off time, 6pm instead of 11.59pm, as unfair to the licence holders because this will adversely affect the businesses.

We should remember that one of the findings of the Committee of Inquiry into the Little India riot in 2013 was the negative influence of alcohol. Fortunately, besides one death from the accident, the riot only caused damage to assets.

Money can be earned another day, but any loss of life is irreversible. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.
