The theme of this year's World No Tobacco Day, facilitated by the World Health Organisation (WHO), is "Tobacco and heart disease".

The day, observed on May 31, is to highlight the health risks associated with tobacco use and encourage governments to adopt effective policies to reduce smoking and other tobacco use.

WHO stated that tobacco use is the largest cause of death and disease as it causes many types of cancer, as well as heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and other health problems.

Taking a leaf from this tobacco-free initiative, Singapore should also consider setting aside one day a week to kickstart a wellness-related effort towards a smoke-less environment.

Many smokers will decry this move, but just like how the Government has managed to keep our city clean, we should also work towards having cleaner air, without cigarette smoke.

If Saturdays were to be chosen, for instance, then it will also be the target day for encouraging and supporting those who want to kick the habit.

The prime objective, too, is to remind the young of the ills of tobacco consumption and health-related issues, and to persuade, with positive action, wannabe smokers not to pick up this unhealthy habit.
