I read with interest the report, “HSR decision ‘not an ominous sign for bilateral relations’, shows Mahathir-led govt’s priorities: Analysts” (May 30)

The new Malaysian government has dropped the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High-Speed Rail project, which it deems not beneficial to its country for domestic reasons.

There are people who have the notion that the cancellation of the HSR project is due to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's belief that Singapore has much to gain at Malaysia's expense. Others have agreed with him that the project needs to go to reduce the national debt.

Singapore must not resent our neighbour's decision just because it has placed its national interest and well-being above everything else.

We can only hope that this cancelled rail project will not adversely affect the relations of the two countries, which should continue to grow in a climate of trust and openness.
